"Spring Babies"

Hello my friends,
It was a very interesting week ..I received a phone call last Friday evening from Holly Valentine, one of our local veterinarians. She informed me that she had a baby bird that someone brought into the office that day. I have never observed a baby bird being fed before…and I was delighted with the opportunity
.

Well around 7 am Saturday morning the loud little visitor made its entrance into Two Acre Wood. Holly showed me how she cares for the little creature and how much to feed. (Every 20 minutes) The baby bird is a Starling. (Don't groan)
MouseOver
She told me that someone brought the little bird into the vet's office,
then they quickly left.
Soooo now you have a little defenseless life form to care for.
Unbeknownst to the Good Samaritan, if they would have left the little bird alone, the parents would have continued to care for the fledgling. It had probably fallen out of the nest. The parents of the little bird would have encouraged the baby to hunker down in the safety of a nearby bush. So, if you see a healthy baby don't take it to a far away place. If it's in immediate danger, like a driveway or parking lot, take it back to the nearest protected area. You can bet that the parents aren't far away. Of course, there are always exceptions.

Well, I was apprehensive at first…. Watching her put the syringe down his crop. But I knew that he was in good hands. The heating pad, on low,,,(didn't want to cook the little guy!) Just the right amount of food in the syringe, and she told me that they insert it far enough down his little gullet, to by pass its trachea.
We spent the morning together, watching the birds at TAW, and waiting for the oven timer to go off. (Every 20 minutes) It gave me a greater understanding what these professionals undergo to steward our friends of nature. It was amazing that after awhile, I believe that the bird soon associated the beeping timer with being fed.
Kind of like "Pavlov's Dog"

Enter the second baby! Sunday afternoon Holly invited me to her home and she introduced me to an orphaned Opossum. What a unusual critter.

Their little feet just don't seem to match their bodies.

It looks like they have little gloves on with the fingers cut out!

SO CUTE!

I think babies are so sweet when they are suckling.
(Even if it's a syringe.)

Hey, ya gotta make-do with what you have at the moment! Right?
As adults, they can hang on to tree limbs by their tails.

And even sleep that way!

Upside down!
Wow, check out those teeth!
The young man included in the pictures is Holly's son,
Aaron Valentine. (Boy Scout extraordinaire)
This little 'possum was believed to have been abandoned after falling off his mothers back. You know that Opossums are marsupials, like the Kangaroos of Australia.

I love this....Even though this is a Toy Opossum, it serves a very important function.

I gives a bit of comfort to the little one!
Oh by the way....
they named the 'possum

comments I wanted to share with you:
Hey Patty, I just love that first shot of the baby 'possum ..... too cute! We don't get them up here so I've never seen one before. And of course, ALL baby birds are adorable ..... even starlings. ;)
My yard has been taken over by spring birds and I'm loving it! I have: grackles, red winged blackbirds, starlings, rusty blackbirds, purple finches, red breasted nuthatches, black capped chickadees, American tree sparrows, fox sparrows, white throated sparrows, white crowned sparrows (just saw this one a minute ago!), dark eyed juncos, downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, a few pine grosbeaks are still here and this morning, 3 evening grosbeaks showed up ..... it's wonderful!
You can see my photos here if you like. I'll be updating shortly.

Your cardinal painting is nicely settled on my dining room wall. Hubby loves it and so do I. :)
All the best to you (but please send some warm weather this way!), Tammie in Canada
I loved this. I love baby animals too. This little possum is wonderful. I thought I was the only person alive who loved those ugly little things. When I was growing
up and still home with my parents, I had wild rabbits, domestic rabbits, white mice,a skunk, snakes, cows, pigs, chickens, horses & any cat or dog that I could find.
Once my Father said to me, " if you bring home 1 more thing, you are going out with it."I have always been an animal lover.Since I have been on my own away from my parents, I have rescued tons of dogs &cats. I rescued a brown mouse that the security found in the mall where I worked & he was going to kill it. I took it home & kept it forever, til I think it got poisoned on the ink in the newspaper in his pen. I bought a rabbit & it looked like a wild rabbit. She was beautiful & grew to be huge.Take care,
Thank you for sharing Patty, Elizabeth
